Closure Of Parkside Colliery, Newton-Le-willows (No. 1)

That this House condemns British Coal for precipately ending coal mining operations at Parkside Colliery on Friday 23rd October, withoput any consultation with the workforce; notes that Parkside Colliery made profits of ú5,093,000 in 1987-88, ú3,258,000 in 1988-89, ú1,729,000 in 1989-90, ú5,074,000 in 1990-91 and ú2,874,000 in 1991-92; further notes that a new coal seam recently put into production, with ú6,500,000 worth of new coal producing machinery, was performing well and expected to produce substantial profits; and demands that British Coal restart production immediately at the colliery until their claim that the colliery is making substantial losses can be examined by the Trade and Industry Select Committee.
