Regional Crime Squad Arrangements For Wales
EDM number 757 in 1992-93, proposed by Alun Michael on 05/11/1992.
That this House notes with grave concern the Home Office proposal to merge the No. 8 Regional Crime Squad, which covers the South Wales, Gwent and Dyfed-Powys Police Areas, with No. 7, which covers the West of England; considers the proposal to be crazy and illogical as South and Mid-Wales have a clear community of interest; notes the squad has only recently been given a glowing report by the Inspectorate of Constabulary, which describes the Squad as an effective and highly motivated professional organisation, as well managed and progressive, as having excellent results with a low level of complaints and tasks performed with integrity and professionalism; notes also the excellent support given to No. 8 Regional Crime Squad by the chief constables and the police authorities in Wales and that all three police authorities oppose the merger; and, in the light of these comments, calls on the Home Secretary to reject the proposed change and to build on the strengths of the existing structure.
