Practical Support For The Miners (No.1)
EDM number 909 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Simpson on 20/11/1992.
That this House calls upon the British public to organise and support electricity protests, switching off their mains supply for precisely 5 minutes each Sunday evening at 9 p.m., until the generating companies agree to buy British coal rather than importing coal or changing to gas; recognises that the purchasing decisions of the electricity supply industry are now a key factor in keeping British pits open; and knows that power surges produce real problems for the generating companies and that such protests offer the public a perfectly legal way of demonstrating their total opposition to coal closure proposals based on a reducing demand for British coal.
