Macedonia (No.2)

EDM number 968 in 1992-93, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 01/12/1992.

That this House urges Her Majesty's Government to address urgent attention to the demands for recognition of that part of the former Yugoslavia known since 1946 as the 'Peoples Federative Republic of Macedonia'; recommends however that they proceed with caution; recommends in particular that they ascertain to their satisfaction that the human rights of ethnic minorities are in fact being safeguarded as guaranteed in the recently revised constitution; recommends further that they make a careful assessment of official support Organisation'; notes with deepest concern in this respect the decision of the Skopje administration to use as a national emblem the star of Vergina, the ancient emblem of the Greek royal house of Macedon, including Philip II and Alexander the Great; understands the sensitivity and alarm aroused by this in Greece and in particular in the province of Macedonia; and finally therefore urges Her Majesty's Government to press upon Skopje the need to adopt a title which clearly demonstrates that it offers no threat to the territory nor to the heritage of the Greek province of Macedonia.
