County Hall (No. 2)
EDM number 1382 in 1993-94, proposed by Jim Dowd on 23/06/1994.
That this House remains opposed to the use of County Hall as an hotel, symbolising a violation of both of its purpose as the home of London Government and of the democratic wishes of Londoners; is appalled that it has now been defaced by the giant sized advertising slogans of its current joint-owners the Virgin Group; believes that this perfectly represents Conservative values which put cash before democracy; urges the Government to request Virgin to cease putting one of London's finest buildings to such a tawdry purpose; reminds Virgin that Londoners take a dim view of the historic seat of their own democratic power being despoiled by a tacky advertising hoarding; urges the planning authority to investigate whether planning permission has been granted for such a use of a listed building; and looks forward to the day when Londoners once again can vest their power in a capital-wide government that will ensure London will operate as a world class city.
