Hospital Closures In Halifax
EDM number 1432 in 1993-94, proposed by Alice Mahon on 04/07/1994.
That this House supports the view put by the Bishop of Birmingham condemning the market led National Health Service; agrees that the patient is reduced to the status of a unit of consumption and exchange; draws attention to the situation in Halifax where managers of the Calderdale Trust have produced a development plan aiming to close two of the three hospitals, arguing that Calderdale is overbedded, a statement which is simply not true; notes that on the contrary, because of a policy of closing wards for the weekend in order to save money, patients with serious illnesses are de-camped to other overcrowded wards, sometimes in another hospital; further notes that many nurses are dreadfully overworked; and believes these inhumane and un-Christian actions must end immediately.
