Extension Of London Underground
EDM number 1488 in 1993-94, proposed by Jim Dowd on 11/07/1994.
That this House believes that bold new extensions of the London Underground into South East London and on to Surrey and Kent are now an economic, environmental, planning and public health necessity; urges the Government to commission London Underground Limited to carry out a comprehensive feasibility study of such extensions with a remit to incorporate an assessment of all the environmental and economic benefits that would accrue to the region as a result; notes the CBI's estimate that over ú10 billion annually is lost to the economy through traffic congestion in London and the South East; further notes the increase in respiratory disease cases in London as a result of car pollution; recognises that significantly increased road building in South East London is a non-starter given public opposition as shown in the response to the South Circular Assessment Studies; believes that London cannot properly develop as a world class city if around two million of its residents are denied direct access to the tube and if visitors and tourists are encouraged to believe that nearly half the capital is not worth visiting through restricted access; and therefore urges the Government, after over a century of a near-total absence of the Tube in South London, to take the opportunity to correct an historical error of monumental proportions and begin the process which would ensure all areas of the capital are served by the London Underground.
