Future Of The Post Office (No. 2)

EDM number 1608 in 1993-94, proposed by Hugh Dykes on 19/10/1994.

That this House welcomes the wide scale debate that has taken place over the summer on the Green Paper on The Future of the Postal Service; notes the continuing opposition of the general public, post office managers, and sub postmasters to any plans to break up postal service and privatise Royal Mail and Parcelforce; notes that submissions on the Green Paper from organisations such as Direct Marketing Association, the Mail Users Association, the Post Office Users National Council and the Periodical Publishers Association all expressed doubts and opposition to the break up and privatisation of the postal service; is concerned that any moves to privatisation would lead to widespread closure of rural sub post offices and the loss of jobs throughout the country, and particularly in Northern Ireland; welcomes the publication of a report of London Economics, The Future of Postal Services - a critique of the Government's Green Paper, which sets out the steps necessary to give the Post Office the commercial freedom it needs without the necessity of a change in ownership; and therefore supports those parts of the Green Paper which retain the Post Office as an integral organisation in the public sector, endowed with greater commercial freedom.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
