Equalising State Pension Age
EDM number 1610 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 19/10/1994.
That this House is deeply concerned by Her Majesty's Government's announcement that it intends to equalise state pension age for men and women at 65 years; believes that if such legislation were introduced the effect would be that the vast majority of women will be forced to work longer against their will or claim state benefits and men, the majority of whom do not work between the ages of 60 and 64 years, would continue to be denied a pension; and calls upon the Government to reconsider such actions and instead to introduce a law equalising state pension entitlements at the age of 60 years, thereby allow British people a fairer retirement date for their labours, whilst at the same time creating many jobs opportunities for younger people.
