Public Lending Right Fund

EDM number 1617 in 1993-94, proposed by Nigel Jones on 20/10/1994.

That this House applauds the success of the 1994 Cheltenham Festival of Literature, under the inspired direction of Mr Humphrey Carpenter, which attracted record attendances; further notes the welcome partcipation of certain honourable and Noble Members of both Houses of Parliament; yet notes with concern that the modest Public Lending Right Fund of ú5 million covering 23,132 registered authors in February 1994 was cut by ú64,000 in 1994-95, with further cuts threatened; and demands that the Fund be increased to enable members of the writing fraternity who contribute so much to cultural life to receive a more fitting compensation for their efforts.
