Caribbean Trade In Primates
EDM number 343 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 13/01/1994.
That this House congratulates the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection for its recently held investigation which uncovered a brutal trade in primates from the Caribbean islands of Barbados and St. Kitts; finds it unacceptable that each year hundreds of African green monkeys from these islands are captured and shipped to laboratories in Europe and the USA; notes also that monkeys treated in this way were frequently injured and killed in the trapping process and often kept in poor and sometimes appalling conditions; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to help the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection to stop these appalling practices by immediately introducing a ban on the import of these animals into Britain.
This motion has been signed by a total of 76 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
