Nuclear Waste Dumping At Sea
EDM number 36 in 1993-94, proposed by Simon Hughes on 18/11/1993.
That this House welcomes the vote by 37 countries at the London Convention meeting held at the International Maritime Organisation from 8th to 12th November permanently to ban the dumping of radioactive waste at sea; is alarmed by attempts by Her Majesty's Government at the Convention to keep this option open for bulky radioactive items from decommissioned reactors and submarines, and of reports that the United Kingdom may defy the ban; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to accept the opinion of the overwhelming majority of countries and announce that it will abide by the permanent ban.
