Screening Of "in The Name Of The Father"

EDM number 449 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 26/01/1994.

That this House welcomes the decision of the honourable Members for Eltham and North East Derbyshire to arrange, with Universal International Pictures, a special preview screening for honourable Members and Peers of the forthcoming film, In the Name of the Father, which is based on the story of the Guildford 4; notes the screening of the film on Tuesday 1st February followed by a debate on the issues raised by the film with the director Jim Sheridan and his co-producer Arthur Lappin; accepts that their intention is that the film should help heal some of the wounds of the troubles; agrees with the cross-party, British-Irish peace group, New Consensus, that it would be wrong to judge the film until it has been seen; recognises that it is vital that the film is not hijacked by the gullible or the guilty to justify the IRA's hideous campaign of violence; further agrees that miscarriages of justice such as those of the Guildford 4 prove the need for legal and political reform but do not give a mandate to the IRA to kill; and remembers with great sadness the people whose limbs and lives were torn apart by the Guildford bomb.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
