LONDONERS' VIEWS ON A LONDON-WIDE AUTHORITY
EDM number 494 in 1993-94, proposed by Jim Dowd on 01/02/1994.
That this House calls upon Her Majesty's Government to use the occasion of 5th May, the day of the London borough elections, to ask Londoners whether they wish to see the creation of an elected authority for the whole of the capital whose function would be to co-ordinate strategic services across the city; notes that the occasion of the borough elections provides a unique opportunity to consult Londoners over an important constitutional and practical issue which affects all Londoners; further notes that this referendum would be conducted with the minimum of fuss and expense given that each London borough will be geared up to run an election on that day; and asserts that such a referendum would constitute an infinitely more practical, democratic and comprehensive poll of London's 4,876,545 electors that the Secretary of State's recent questionnaire, to which 9,000 have responded.
This motion has been signed by a total of 70 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
