Clearing Cheques

That this House notes that some high street banks clear customers' cheques within three days but do not credit accounts for a further day; notes that the banks earn up to ú300 million from this practice; notes that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has sanctioned this; calls on the National Westminster, Lloyd's and Midland to review this practice and credit customers' accounts as soon as cheques are cleared; and calls on the Chancellor and the Banking Ombudsman to investigate this practice and ensure that customers are fairly treated in future.
