Export Of Live Farm Animals

EDM number 543 in 1993-94, proposed by Elliot Morley on 08/02/1994.

That this House congratulates Compassion in World Farming, Granada Television and the RSPCA on their exposure of the live animal export trade on World in Action on 7th February; is concerned that some British exporters are flouting the laws requiring animals to be given food and water en route; is appalled that, despite Government assurances, United Kingdom animals are being slaughtered in Spanish abattoirs which fail to comply with EU laws on pre-slaughter stunning; urges the Government to end the export of animals to Spain for slaughter until the Spanish Government guarantee and the British Government is completely satisfied that Spanish slaughter practices come up to European standards of welfare; and further calls on the Government to support the German Government proposal that a maximum time limit be imposed on slaughter journeys.
