Institute Of Irish Studies

That this House wholeheartedly supports the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool in its attempt to raise the level of knowledge and understanding of Ireland in Britain; recognises that the continuation of the Institute as the national centre for the study of Ireland in Britain requires that external funding be found; congratulates the Government of the Irish Republic in supporting the Institute by funding, for at least two years, a full-time lectureship in Modern Irish; calls on the British Government to match in financial terms, if not exceed, this support by funding a Chair of Irish Studies to demonstrate the scholarly worth of Irish studies; and wishes the Institute well in its campaign to secure development funding for the next five years.
