RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
EDM number 549 in 1993-94, proposed by David Alton on 08/02/1994.
That this House is deeply concerned at new laws recently introduced in the People's Republic of China, which sharply increase state control on Chinese and foreign religious adherents, such laws including requirements that foreigners do not establish religious organisations or organs for managing religious affairs or centres or schools for religious activity and the banning of underground house churches; is appalled at the recent imprisonment of 14 Catholics and Protestants for their beliefs, who are Bishop Julius Jia Zhigua, Bishop Johannes Han Dingxiang, Auxiliary Bishop Shi Hong-Zhen, Father Pei Ronggui, Father Miao Lehua, Father Guo Xijian, Father Chu Tai, Li Haochen, Ge Xinliang, Dai Guillang, Dai Lanmei, Guo Mengshan, Liu Wenjie and Zhang Lanyun; notes the continued imprisonment of many others simply because of their religious beliefs; and urges the government of the People's Republic of China to repeal the new laws on religion, release the above mentioned prisoners and all others who have been imprisoned for their faith, and to ensure that religious freedom is allowed in China.
This motion has been signed by a total of 37 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
