Wales Office Of British Geological Survey

EDM number 566 in 1993-94, proposed by Nigel Jones on 09/02/1994.

That this House notes the announcement of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster that public sector research establishments are to be subject to an efficiency scrutiny with a view to privatisation or rationalisation of facilities and capabilites; notes further that the British Geological Survey is undergoing this process; asserts that the closure of the Wales Office of the BGS would be entirely inappropriate at least until the scrutiny process is complete and recommendations made; notes that closure in 1994 could subject staff and their families to unacceptable upheaval twice within one year; and calls upon the BGS to suspend the closure for a least one year while discussions continue with NERC and the Secretary of State for Wales concerning methods of ensuring that the Wales Office survives and flourishes.

This motion has been signed by a total of 15 MPs.
