Factory Fires

EDM number 65 in 1993-94, proposed by Alex Carlile on 23/11/1993.

That this House deeply regrets the fire in a Shenzhen toy factory in China, which resulted in the death of 81 employees, and offers condolences to the families concerned; notes a similar fire in a Bangkok toy factory in May, which resulted in the death of 188 workers, and that in both cases the number of deaths was compounded by the lack of adequate health and safety regulations in both countries; further notes the plans to deregulate health and safety rules at work outlined in the Gracious Speech; and urges Her Majesty's Government to ensure that no such deregulation will be made as might endanger the lives of British workers in a similar way.
