Donating Life;amdt. Line 1:

EDM number 790A1 in 1993-94, proposed by David Congdon on 21/03/1994.

leave out from 'House' to end and add 'strongly supports the principle that organ donation should remain a voluntary act of giving; urges that this should not be replaced by an "opting-out" system which would legally empower doctors to remove organs from a deceased person unless that person had recorded their objection; believes that such a system is not supported by the majority of the medical profession and could cause great distress to bereaved families leading to incidents which would threaten public confidence and organ donation rates; believes that there is no evidence of such legislation in other countries having fulfilled its aim; congratulates the nurses, doctors and transplant coordinators in hospitals on their skill and sensitivity in obtaining consent from grieving relatives in the vast majority of cases without legislative coercion; and encourages HM Government in its continued commitment to increasing the supply of donor organs through education and good practice.'.

This is a ammendment to 790.
