Defence Of Human Rights

EDM number 849 in 1993-94, proposed by Graham Allen on 14/03/1994.

That this House notes with great concern reports that the Conservative Home Secretary is threatening to erode the ability of British citizens to defend their human rights through the European Court of Human Rights; notes the Government's reluctance to agree to proposals for speedier procedures to resolve human rights cases and for a mandatory right to challenge the Government in the European Court; and calls for these proposals to be endorsed urgently and for the European Convention on Human Rights to be incorporated into British Law so that UK citizens can redress human rights abuses through UK courts rather than European Courts.
