Labour Party And Aid To Malaysia (No. 3)

EDM number 863 in 1993-94, proposed by Anthony Coombs on 15/03/1994.

That this House deplores the irresponsible posturing and continued smear and innuendo by the Labour Party over the provision of aid to Malaysia by the ODA, particularly for the Pergau Dam project; notes that statements by the honourable Members for Monklands West, Copeland and others have jeopardised excellent trading relations with Malaysia and have therefore seriously put at risk jobs throughout the Midlands; urges employees of GEC Alsthom (Stafford) Callender Hamilton (Hereford) Balfour Beatty Power Construction (Derby), Markham & Co. Ltd. (Chesterfield), Cool Technology Ltd. (Kings Winsford), How Fire Ltd. (Dudley), Webster Wilkinson Ltd. (Telford), Sarck Heat Transfer (Birmingham), Landon Engineering (Castle Works) Ltd. (Stafford), Charles Harbage Ltd. (Birmingham), Peglar and London (Wolverhampton), Brown McFarlane Ltd. (Stoke-on-Trent), British Ropes Ltd. (Birmingham), British Tubes Stockholding (Leamington Spa), J.H. Fenner Ltd. (Leicester), Steelwork Plate & Profile (Halesowen), Swallowhill Steels Ltd. (Cannock), Land Rover Ltd. (Solihull), Andrew Sykes UK Ltd. (Wolverhampton), all of whom have contracts indirectly or directly concerning the Pergau Dam, to remind Labour honourable Members of their responsibilities towards the jobs and living standards of their constituents, responsibilities which ought to transcend Labour's obsession with cheap political point scoring; and concludes that Labour's Business Plan for Britain is exposed as the ineffectual fig-leaf for effective policy that it is, as Labour honourable Members appear to be prepared in practice, to sacrifice the business orders, exports and related jobs of thousands of British workers, for the opportunity to attack Britain's trading partners in the increasingly important South East Asian regional market.
