Conference On The "future Of The Civil Service"

That this House, recognising the professionalism, independence, non-partisan, non-political and high ethical standards of the Civil Service, notes that the general public are opposed to the privatisation and contracting-out of their public services and with it the loss or under-funding of those services; rejects the Government's policy of privatisation and the handing over of essential and often confidential services to commercial organisations whose priority will be to put profit before quality; opposes the policy of reducing the Civil Service to a tiny core, a policy which will lead to the loss of thousands of jobs in areas already suffering from high unemployment; therefore congratulates the Civil Service trade unions on organising a major conference on 22nd March to allow full debate on the future of the Civil Service; and accordingly calls upon the Government to abandon the destruction of the Civil Service.
