Norwegian Whaling

EDM number 1065 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Banks on 01/05/1995.

That this House condemns without reservation the resumption of whaling by the Norwegians; believes that a country which parades its green credentials around the world should honour international agreements in respect of the great whales; points out that the great whales belong to the planet and not to any individual country, and that it was the self-same, greedy, narrow-minded actions of whalers in the past which brought these magnificent mammals to the brink of extinction; wants to know how a country which is one of the richest on earth can seek to justify its selfish action on economic grounds; draws attention to the enormous suffering endured by hunted whales which would be condemned as unacceptable for land based mammals; and calls upon the Norwegian Government to cease whaling immediately and if it refuses demands that Her Majesty's Government imposes appropriate sanctions against Norway.
