Destruction Of Charar-I-sharif Shrine

EDM number 1120 in 1994-95, proposed by Roger Godsiff on 15/05/1995.

That this House, dismayed by the destruction in Kashmir of the Charar-i-Sharif shrine, and of 2,200 shops and houses in the surrounding area, and deploring the arrest of Shabir Shar and the house arrest of other Kashmiri leaders, calls on the Indian authorities in the State of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise restraint, to initiate an immediate and thorough independent investigation of the cirumstances which led to the shrine's destruction, to release the political leaders and to enter into discussions with them on how to restore peace and order in the territory, to invite the International Committee of the Red Cross to send representatives to the area to give humanitarian relief to the victims, and to allow Amnesty International to undertake an urgent investigation of alleged human rights violations in Kashmir.
