English Football Supporters Abroad

EDM number 1144 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Banks on 17/05/1995.

That this House expresses its deep concern at the treatment of Chelsea and Arsenal supporters following their teams in the European Cup Winners Cup this season; acknowledges that a small minority of hooligans and fascist thugs have done great damage to the reputation of English football but insists that this unacceptable reality does not give licence to police forces in this or any other country to abuse the civil rights of the great majority of football supporters; draws attention to the mindless brutality inflicted upon innocent decent supporters of Chelsea and Arsenal by Belgian, Spanish, Italian and French police; and demands that Her Majesty's Government stops finding excuses for the unacceptable infringements of UK citizens' rights and establishes an official inquiry into recent events with a view to ascertaining the facts and, where necessary, seeking appropriate compensation and apologies to supporters of both clubs.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
