National Vegetarian Week

EDM number 1153 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Banks on 22/05/1995.

That this House welcomes National Vegetarian Week; recognised the health benefits of a vegetarian diet and that many studies show vegetarians to suffer 30 per cent. less heart disease and 40 per cent. less cancer than those who continue to eat meat; notes that several million British citizens have adopted a vegetarian diet and that 2,000 people join them every week; further believes that increasing levels of vegetarianism offer unique savings to the National Health Service through lower in-patient costs and fewer consultations with general practitioners; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to fund research into the potential economic benefits of greater health through the continued growth of vegetarianism amongst the British population.

This motion has been signed by a total of 21 MPs.
