Death Penalty In South Africa

EDM number 1216 in 1994-95, proposed by Chris Mullin on 08/06/1995.

That this House congratulates the constitutional Court of South Africa for its courageous decision to abolish the death penalty; recognises that the alleged deterrent value of the death penalty is greatly outweighed by the risk of error and the barbarity which surrounds its application; and calls on other countries which profess civilised values, in particular the United States of America, to follow the example of South Africa.
