Brent Spar And The Sea Environment

That this House warmly welcomes the decision by Shell to abandon its plans to dump the Brent Spar at sea as a victory for common sense; is relieved that the threat to the marine environment posed by the lethal cocktail of oil and toxic waste has been lifted; congratulates Greenpeace on spearheading the campaign of public pressure; thanks the governments which have argued so effectively against Shell; regrets that the United Kingdom Government stood alone in refusing to accept the overwhelming case for disposal on land; and calls for the Government to accept that what is now required is a moratorium on further disposals pending a fully independent environmental assessment of decommissioning options.
