Monklands District Council And The Labour Party

EDM number 1292 in 1994-95, proposed by Alex Salmond on 22/06/1995.

That this House notes with concern the findings of Professor Robert Black's investigations into Monklands District Council; congratulates Councillor Neil Douglas and the SNP group on Monklands District Council for helping to bring this scandal to public prominence; believes that those Labour councillors in the Monklands District Council area who were elected in April this year should resign their unitary authority seats and stand for re-election; recalls that the honourable Member for Monklands East called allegations against Monklands District Council 'tittle-tattle' and the honourable Member for Monklands West said they were 'McCarthyite smears'; calls on the honourable Member for Hamilton and Jack McConnell, the General Secretary of the Labour Party in Scotland, to explain why a Labour Party investigation did not uncover similar findings; and also calls on the Right honourable Member for Sedgefield to disclose when he was first informed of the seriousness of the situation in Monklands District Council.

This motion has been signed by a total of 6 MPs.
