Mr Bernard Crofton And The Immigration Service

EDM number 1319 in 1994-95, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 28/06/1995.

That this House calls for an enquiry into how Mr Bernard Crofton, the former Director of Housing at Hackney Council, could hold a secret unauthorised and unminuted meeting with officers of the Immigration Service to discuss the continuation of working relationships with Hackney Council officers after he had been suspended by Hackney Council; notes that the meeting took place on 31st October 1994 and that the Immigration and Nationality Division of the Home Office were represented by Ms Arnfield, Ms Hutcheson and Mr McCormack; is astonished that on 17th February 1995 B. R. Barrett, an Assistant Director of the Immigration Service, wrote to Mr Crofton at his home address a letter which proves that the Tenancy Audit Team of Hackney Council requested an unauthorised check on the immigration status of the Council's Director of Personnel and on other council workers; is outraged that Mr Crofton allowed himself to become an agent of the Immigration and Nationality Division and the Tenancy Audit Team to become an unlawful arm of the Immigration and Nationality Division; and calls for an investigation of how over a period Mr Crofton became so obsessed with the immigration status of council workers that the obsession became so great it caused him personally to act unlawfully and to allow the Immigration and Nationality Division to act unlawfully, with Hackney Council workers as the victims of these unlawful acts.
