Political Developments In Nigeria

EDM number 1347 in 1994-95, proposed by David Atkinson on 04/07/1995.

That this House, whilst deeply regretting the current lack of democracy in Nigeria, and expressing its profound concern about reports of abuses of basic human rights, notes with interest the publication on 27th June of the Report of the National Constitutional Conference in that country setting out its recommendations for a hand-over of power to democratic civilian government; welcomes the commitments given by the Head of State in his address on the occasion of the publication of that Report that the Provisional Ruling Council would respond within three months to those recommendations and give approval to the Draft Constitution, that it would then announce on 1st October a timetable for the handing over of power to a democratically elected government, that the ban on political activities is lifted and that a National Electoral Commission, will be established to review the electoral register and supervise the formation and regulation of political parties; whilst regretting the tardiness with which these arrangements have been brought forward, nevertheless congratulates the participants in the National Constitutional Conference on what they have achieved; and urges Her Majesty's Government to continue to use its influence with the Government of Nigeria, both bilaterally and through the Commonwealth, to assist and encourage the people of Nigeria as they move forward down the difficult road to democracry.
