Ealing Council Finances
EDM number 1349 in 1994-95, proposed by Piara S Khabra on 04/07/1995.
That this House regrets the perpetual capacity of Conservative honourable Members deliberately to misunderstand local government finance; considers the decision of Ealing's Labour Council to repay its ú39 million deferred purchase scheme debt as a financially prudent measure which will save the Council more than ú15 million over the next 10 years; notes the failure of Conservative honourable Members to condemn the Tory Council between 1990 and 1994 when it closed old people's homes, severely cut the education budget and wasted money trying to sell the Council's housing stock; further notes that the ú100 a head bribe given by the Tory Council to every council tax payer in 1994 lost Ealing Council ú10 million in income; and calls on honourable Members to condemn the 16 years of Tory Government meddling with local government finance as the prime cause of the Council's financial problems.
