Future Of Rugby Union Football

EDM number 1400 in 1994-95, proposed by Roy Hughes on 13/07/1995.

That this House is concerned about the important meeting taking place this weekend of the Welsh Rugby Union and of the crisis facing other home unions which is the direct result of the massive power and money being wielded by media magnates like Rupert Murdoch; recognises the destablising effect of such cheque book pressure; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to take whatever measures may be necessary to ensure that sporting codes which have functioned for over a century together with whole league structures, clubs and traditions that have helped shape the culture of Wales and British sport are not swept away by the desire for big audiences, profits and power of media moguls.
