Cardiff Millenium Stadium

EDM number 1442 in 1994-95, proposed by Jon Owen Jones on 19/07/1995.

That this House welcomes the Government's recently announced commitment to sport and believes that in keeping with that spirit the United Kingdom needs a sports stadium and entertainment centre of world class stature, to attract prestigious international sporting and cultural events to this country; warmly welcomes the ambitious plans put forward by the Welsh Rugby Union for the construction of a Millenium Stadium in Cardiff which would be able to host the Rugby World Cup final in 1999 as a prelude to a host of other international sporting and cultural events in the new century; notes that the construction of the stadium - partly funded, if its application is successful, by proceeds from the National Lottery and partly by the privatesector - would create many jobs in the short and long term; further notes that there is enormous public support for the scheme throughout Wales; believes that the stadium would bring enormous economic development advantages not just to the people of Wales, but to people throughout the United Kingdom; and therefore gives its whole-hearted backing to this exciting scheme.
