Nigeria And Recent Speech Of General Abacha
EDM number 1460 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 16/10/1995.
That this House notes the seizure of power by a brutal military dictatorship in Nigeria after the annulled presidential elections in 1993; notes the flagrant abuse of human, civil and political rights in the country; recognises the international concern over the imprisonment of critics of the regime, including Chief Abiola, widely seen as the victor of the June 1993 elections; notes international appeals for clemency in the cases of alleged coup plotters; notes the speech of General Abacha on 1st October 1995 and welcomes positive indications as to clemency from the death penalty for the alleged coup plotters in response to widespread and united international appeals; urges the military dictatorship to free all political prisoners including Chief Abiola and former head of state General Obasanjo; and further urges the regime to institute a fair and open judicial process within the country.
