Action On Lorry Drivers Hours
EDM number 1530 in 1994-95, proposed by Graham Allen on 26/10/1995.
That this House recognises that around a quarter of all accidents on motorways are caused by driver fatigue; further understands that the legal guidelines for lorry drivers of 4.5 hours without a break and work up to 15 hours a day means that drivers can be legally pushed to a point where they are tired and dangerous; and calls for a review of the maximum hours behind the wheel, for black box tachographs to be progressed, for appropriate penalties to be introduced for bully employers who cause drivers to work overlong hours and for research into the number of hours that can be practically driven before a driver becomes a risk to other road users, as well as supporting the work of the all-party group BRAKE for its campaigning activities in making roads safer.
