Nuclear And Toxic Waste Proposed Repository At Sellafield

EDM number 1568 in 1994-95, proposed by Eddie McGrady on 02/11/1995.

That this House calls on NIREX and British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. to abandon all plans to excavate a laboratory deep underground on the site of the proposed repository for the reprocessing of nuclear and toxic waste a Sellafield; and further calls on both organisations to take cognisance of a Government report prepared by a firm of consultants for Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution which casts grave doubt on the long-term safety of the underground repository project, indicates that plutonium from a proposed nuclear waste store could contaminate drinking water and ultimately expose local people to radiation 10,000 times the legal maximum and is deeply critical of the nuclear industry for stopping the Goverment's Pollution Inspectorate from assessing the long-term safety of the proposed underground repository near Sellafield.
