Tayside Regional Council And The Elderly

EDM number 213 in 1994-95, proposed by Andrew Welsh on 07/12/1994.

That this House congratulates Tayside Regional Council on its bold and innovative fuel poverty initiative which will provide the vulnerable elderly with a generous package of benefits helping to protect them from the effects of fuel poverty at a cost of ú503,000, a dramatic increase on the ú7,000 spent on tackling fuel poverty in the last year of the previous administration; notes that these measures include a three month holiday from meals on wheels and lunch club charges which will save the elderly an average of ú20 per year; further notes the provision of a freephone advice line, and an extensive advertising campaign, both of which will provide information and assistance to those who are hardest hit by fuel poverty; and recognizes that this proposal represents one of the most comprehensive fuel poverty relief measures ever to be pursued by a local authority in Scotland.
