Safeway, Gateshead

EDM number 220 in 1994-95, proposed by David Clelland on 08/12/1994.

That this House considers the decision of Safeway to close its Gateshead town centre store as a consequence of the opening of its new out of town store to be in sharp contrast to the recent pronouncements of the Secretary of State for the Environment; finds it inconsistent of the Secretary of State to have overruled the local authority by granting planning permission for the new store and naive of him to have believed the assurances of Safeway that closures would not be consequent; and therefore calls on the Secretary of State to resign forthwith.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
