Scottish National Party And Dumbarton District Bye-Election

EDM number 239 in 1994-95, proposed by Alex Salmond on 09/12/1994.

That this House congratulates Gordon Smillie on his election as Councillor for the Bonhill East Ward of Dumbarton District Council; warmly welcomes this excellent result for the Scottish National Party in gaining a seat from Labour; notes that the Conservative candidate received only 14 votes or 1.1 per cent. of the poll; further notes that the result is the lowest Tory vote ever polled in a local government bye-election in Scotland; and believes that this result is indicative of what the people of Scotland think of Government plans to increase the tax burden on Scotland's whisky industry.

This motion has been signed by a total of 5 MPs.
