Conduct Of The Secretary Of State For The Environment Concerning Derbyshire County;council

EDM number 306 in 1994-95, proposed by Harry Barnes on 16/12/1994.

That this House notes the ungracious and inaccurate attacks made by the Secretary of State for the Environment on Derbyshire County Council in his 1st December statement on local government finance; further notes that there is no evidence for his claim of mismanagement; recognises that Derbyshire County Council is not included in one of the 412 findings of maladministration made last year by the Local Government Ombudsman; recalls that the Chief Medical Officer singled Derbyshire out for its work on the Health of the Nation; further recalls that the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health said that Derbyshire's new mental health policies should be used as an example of good practice by others; further recognises the acknowledgement by Brian Jackson, Toyota's Director of Corporate Affairs, to the county council for its imaginative and high quality bid and support package which resulted in Toyota deciding to locate in Derbyshire; refutes the claim of the Secretary of State for the Environment that Derbyshire County Council has underspent on the police year after year; and calls upon the Secretary of State to publicly acknowledge the merits of the council and to improve central government funding of its services.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
