WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS

EDM number 481 in 1994-95, proposed by David Alton on 25/01/1995.

That this House reaffirms its commitment to the improvement in the status of women and the pursuit of equal rights for both sexes; notes that the Fourth World Conference on Women is to be held in September in Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, a state notorious for its abuse of human rights in general and in particular for its systematic abuse of women through an oppressive programme of population control involving mandatory contraception, compulsory sterilisation and forced abortion; condemns this choice of venue by the UN Commission on the Status of Women as insensitive in the extreme; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to withdraw from the conference until a more suitable venue is found.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
