Theodhori Bezhani And The Albanian Supreme Court Of Appeal
EDM number 543 in 1994-95, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 03/02/1995.
That this House notes with concern that Theodhori Bezhani and his four fellow members of the Omonoia organisation when being tried and convicted in Albania on charges of spying and inciting rebellion, were denied their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights, the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, and under Albanian law in that they were not allowed to cross-examine witnesses for the prosecution nor to summon witnesses in their own defence; trusts that the Court of Cassation, which is the supreme court of appeal in Albania, will uphold its high reputation for independence, integrity and the quality of its legal procedures when hearing the appeals against these convictions, which commence on 8th February; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to advise the President of Albania that the international community expects nothing less than the highest standards of justice for these appellants.
