Ulster Unionist Election Success In North Down

EDM number 882 in 1994-95, proposed by James Molyneaux on 23/03/1995.

That this House congratulates Mrs Marion Smith, the successful Ulster Unionist candidate in the Bangor West by-election in North Down; notes that she increased the Ulster Unionist vote by 50 per cent., replacing the Alliance Party at the head of the poll; notes that this is the latest in a string of Ulster Unionist local government by-election successes; further notes that the Conservative candidate got merely eight per cent. of the vote, despite attacking the Framework Document and distancing herself from Government policies; and concludes that this result demonstrates the folly of Northern Ireland Office ministers who have wrongly suggested that Right honourable and honourable Ulster Unionist Members to not reflect the views of the great number in Ulster in opposing the gimcrack proposals in the Framework Document.

This motion has been signed by a total of 9 MPs.
