Acquittal Of Lindis Percy

That this House congratulates Lindis Percy, of Bradford, on her acquittal on 13th June by a stipendiary magistrate at Mildenhall in Suffolk of all charges against her, including assault and resisting arrest; notes these charges arose from an incident in 1995 when Ms Percy was walking on a public road through the American base at Mildenhall; further notes Ms Percy was followed by an armed American soldier, riding a mountain bike, and wearing a yellow reflector jacket with police on the back and front; is concerned the soldier refused to comply with a request from Ms Percy to stop following her, and with a warning from Ms Percy that the soldier was committing an offence under the Public Order Acts; understands Ms Percy undertook a citizen's arrest of the American soldier who with another American soldier then assaulted Ms Percy; is alarmed that the stipendiary magistrate, after viewing a video film of the incident taken by American military personnel and submitted as evidence by the prosecution, described the violence used by the American soldiers against Ms Percy as shocking; urges the Secretary of State for Defence to take appropriate action following the acquittal of Ms Percy to ensure American forces based in the United Kingdom observe the rule of United Kingdom law; and requests the Secretary of State to place a copy of the video in the Library.
