Civil War In Burundi
EDM number 1129 in 1995-96, proposed by Jon Owen Jones on 09/07/1996.
That this House, horrified by the estimate that more than 100,000 people in Burundi have been massacred and 200,000 have become refugees as a result of the conflict there, and mindful of the failure of the international community to take action swiftly enough to prevent genocidal conflict in Bosnia and Rwanda, calls for urgent action by the United Kingdom Government to put forward to the UN a set of proposals designed to respond to the conflict in Burundi by imposing an embargo on arms sales to Burundi and to insurgents operating from neighbouring countries, expanding the scale of the activity of the UN human rights monitors in Burundi, and warning the Government of Zaire not to allow their territory to be used as a base for insurgents.
