Ministry Of Defence Police
EDM number 1179 in 1995-96, proposed by Gwyneth Dunwoody on 16/07/1996.
That this House has serious concerns about the Ministry of Defence's proposal to replace some 600 or 700 Ministry of Defence police officers responsible for the security and policing of MoD establishments with a newly formed Military Provost Guard Service starting in April 1997; notes that there are no plans for an independent authority to investigate complaints against Military Provost Guard Service personnel; is further concerned that armed military guards who lack constabulary powers will increase the workload of local police forces; further notes that the cost of early severance for MoD police officers for the two year pilot scheme will be ú5.5 million; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Defence to abandon these misguided changes.
