Benefits Reduction For 18-25 Year Olds

EDM number 168 in 1995-96, proposed by Alex Salmond on 05/12/1995.

That this House condemns the proposal of the honourable Member for Dumfermline East to reduce benefits to 18-25 year olds if they do not meet his specified work and training criteria as an offensive and misguided attempt to blame the unemployed for the lack of jobs; notes it fails to address the needs of those who have long-term illness, drug dependency, mental illness, or those who are homeless; and notes and agrees with the assessment of Shelter Scotland, the Institute for Policy and Public Research, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, the Scottish Council for the Single Homeless, the Scottish Low Pay Unit, and the Strathclyde Poverty Alliance that these proposals will lead to more young people becoming homeless and living in poverty.

This motion has been signed by a total of 4 MPs.
